produced with help from: John Bell, Ed Bennett, Bruce Golden, Todd Horvitz, Charles Lee, Risto Mäntylä, Akihiko Matsumoto, Rob McCabe, Mark Parisi, Dave Prokopy, Don Sheppard and Brad Usasz Introduction This discography attempts to list all the Beach Boys' album, single and EP releases. It only includes compilations with previously unreleased material. Look in the file 'compile.htm' for various 'cheesy' compilations that have been issued by Capitol. It is concerned with American releases. The release dates, chart information, catalogue numbers, etc. correspond to that territory. Although full information about the original vinyl issues are given, emphasis is given to the CD Beach Boys' releases as these are 'easiest' to pick up today. Short CD History In 1990, Capitol decided to release all their Beach Boys' albums on CD, putting two complete albums onto one CD (their albums run to approx. 25 minutes!) and including some single, B-sides and previously unreleased tracks on the end to entice the collectors. The material was digitally remastered and the whole project was handled with care. Unfortunately, recently Capitol in their infinite wisdom, deleted these 'two-fers' and re-released the albums, one to each CD without the bonus songs. The 1990 releases of Christmas Album and Pet Sounds are still available. The Brother/Caribou CDs were also digitally remastered, although for some of the songs the wrong masters were used. These reissues have also been deleted. Beach Boys fans have it real tough, don't they? However, the entire 1962-1985 album catalogue was recently re-issued on CD again, so it's not all bad news. The New UK catalogue numbers below are all HDCD 24-bit digitally remastered. Two-fers Catalogue Surfin' Safari_Surfin' USA (54:45) UK: Capitol CDP 7 93691 2 US: Capitol C2 93691 New UK: Capitol 7243 5 31517 2 0 Surfer Girl_Shut Down Volume Two (58:47) UK: Capitol CDP 7 93692 2 US: Capitol C2 93692 New UK: Capitol 7243 5 31515 2 2 Little Deuce Coupe_All Summer Long (58:00) UK: Capitol CDP 7 93693 2 US: Capitol C2 93693 New UK: Capitol 7243 5 31516 2 1 Concert (1964)_Live In London (72:39) UK: Capitol CDP 7 93695 2 US: Capitol C2 93695 New UK: Capitol 7243 5 31861 2 8 Today!_Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) ST-2027 is the catalogue number for Shut Down, Vol. 2 • Track 7 (Surfin') was not re-recorded for the Capitol Surfin' Safari album as stated in the notes to Surfin' Safari/Surfin' USA. It is the Candix version speeded up by one tone. • I can find no evidence that Track 7 (Surfin') was released on Candix 308 as reported in the notes to Surfin' Safari/Surfin' USA. It was released on X 301, Candix 301, Candix 331 & London M.17224. • On page 20 of Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long, the notes should read "all songs are stereo except ... which are mono" • The correct catalogue number for Four By The Beach Boys EP is Capitol R5267, not 5267 as stated in Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long • Track 5 (Help Me, Rhonda - LP Version) on Today/Summer Days should read Help Me, Ronda • Track 9 (Kiss Me, Baby) on Today/Summer Days was released on Capitol 5395, not Capitol 5345 • Track 22 (Summer Means New Love) on Today/Summer Days was not released on 9th March 1966, it was released on 7th March 1966 as the B-side to Caroline, No • Track 24 (And Your Dream Comes True) on Today/Summer Days is listed as And Your Dreams Come True incorrectly several times • Track 26 (You're Welcome) on Smiley Smile/Wild Honey is listed as the B-side to Good Vibrations in the track notes. It was the B-side to Heroes and Villains. • Lots of places where the notes should mention a song is a particular B-side to a single, but they don't. i.e. Fun, Fun, Fun b/w Why Do Fools Fall In Love Dance Dance Dance b/w The Warmth of The Sun Good Vibrations b/w Let's Go Away For Awhile Gettin' Hungry b/w Devoted To You Darlin b/w Here Today Friends b/w Little Bird Do It Again b/w Wake The World Bluebirds Over The Mountain b/w Never Learn Not To Love

Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA November 1, 1963 The Beach Boys were the last act of the day for "Y-Day", sponsored by the Hollywood YMCA and local station KFWB. They were only supposed to perform three songs, but decided on-the-spot to perform "Surfer Girl" as well. They also sang a short acapella tribute to KFWB.

NBC Television Studios, Burbank, CA March 14, 1964 Promoters put together a mega-concert with the hottest stars of the day : the Beatles, Lesley Gore and the Beach Boys. The performances were taped live and aired on closed circuit. Douglas James notes that "Monster Mash" was also performed, but not included in the released video. It is unknown where the song was placed in the setlist.

Archive update: Keith Badman's "The Beach Boys" lists this show as performed on March 14, not April 14, as originally thought. The book also places "Monster Mash" after "Surfer Girl" in the setlist.

Garret Coliseum, Montgomery, AL September 18, 1964 Some cool things to note: "Little Honda" is the concert closer and "Johnny B. Goode" is performed in the middle. Other performers at this event included Jan & Dean, Norma Jean, Bobby Wood, and Ace Cannon. Admission was $2.50.

Update: A contributor noted that the venue was called Garret Coliseum, not Alabama State Coliseum, as previously listed.

Japan January, 1966 There is no venue or specific date info for this show, but it is probably from very early in the year, considering that there was at least one other Japanese show in January. Archive update:Keith Badman's "The Beach Boys" lists the Japan tour as January 7-23, therefore this concert was most likely in January.

C-Man notes: "...the version of 'Rhonda' performed here is more complete than that performed later in '66 (in Michigan and France, for instance) in that it includes the guitar solo as on the recorded version. Also, 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' here features Bruce singing harmony behind Dennis in a few places, whereas the version performed in Michigan that fall features Dennis singing solo."

Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ July 23, 1966 The contributor shares: "The opening acts were the Youngbloods (before they became popular with 'Get Together') and the Luvs, an all-female band who dressed in pastels and bell-bottoms. The Luvs performed 'In the Midnight Hour' and 'Wild Thing.'

Convention Hall was off the Boardwalk at this shore community. The Hall actually sat on a pier over the Atlantic Ocean. I was 16-years-old. It was my first 'real' concert. My Mom took my 14-year-old sister and myself. We had fourth row tickets. I remember calling out for 'Carl' a number of times. When he did look our way, my sister lost it for the rest of the concert.

The band consisted of Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston. They wore matching red and white striped shirts and white chinos."

It's interesting to see that Al was singing "You're So Good To Me" at this early date; he would later take the lead on it in the 90's. Also interesting is the medley that mixes ballads and rockers.

Adelphi Theatre, Dublin, Ireland May 2, 1967 First Show From Keith Badman's "The Beach Boys": The Beach Boys are forced to perform the first show of this tour without Carl, and screams of "We want Carl" ring out from the audience. Bruce joins in by saying "We want Carl too" in between numbers.

Other acts on the bill were Derek Billy & The Freshmen, The Vampires, The Strangers, and Joe Cahill. Apparently "Sloop John B" was booed during this first show. Bruce sang lead on "God Only Knows".

Adelphi Theatre, Dublin, Ireland May 2, 1967 Second Show From Melody Maker, courtesy Keith Badman's "The Beach Boys": The sound was rough and the group, except for the hard working Al Jardine, looked dejected. Then halfway through "I Get Around", Carl puffed on stage. "We love you Carl," erupted the audience. "We love you Carl," confirmed Mike Love...Still dresssed in T-Shirt and trousers, Carl tuned his guitar and The Beach Boys launched into the wistful "Surfer Girl".

Honolulu International Center, Honolulu, HI August 26, 1967 The second of the two famous "Lei'd In Hawaii" concerts. It has been rumored that the Boys performed an unreleased instrumental during this concert called "Hawthorne Boulevard", but it is not listed on the contributor's setlist.

Update: A second source, who attended the concert confirmed that "Hawthorne Boulevard" was indeed performed as the opening number. He also comments: "The show was not called "Lei'd in Hawaii" at the time, but rather had been adverstised as "The Beach Boys Summer Spectacular", including Dino, Desi and Billy, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Bobbie Gentry (backed by an orchestra), and the Pickle Brothers (comedy act during intermission)."

JFK Coliseum, Manchester, NH April 22, 1971 The first setlist I've seen with "Sloop John B" in the encore.

C-Man writes: "Riding the wave of a big east coast tour that started with their Carnegie Hall performance in February, the group played this show in New Hampshire that April. Unfortunately, this performance is not as strong as that Carnegie Hall show, or their concert at Boston's Symphony Hall (also in February), although they did play slightly longer. Al and Carl forget lyrics for YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME and GOOD VIBRATIONS, respectively, and the band just seems kinda perfunctory, at best. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting setlist. Bruce mentions Dennis' film debut in "Two Lane Blacktop", scheduled to hit theatres that summer, as well as the new Mamas and Papas reunion album, which he calls "great", and the live version of WOULDN'T IT BE NICE recorded at the Big Sur Folk Festival the previous October, and just released as a single by Ode Records."

Carnegie Hall, New York City September 24, 1971 One of two shows played on this particular day. C-Man writes: "The Boys' triumphant return to Carnegie Hall, scene of their victorious February "come-back". They played two shows this night, at 7:30 and 11:00. Unsure which show this setlist is from. The list of backup personnel above is directly from the concert program, reproduced in Billboard's July 24, 1976 Beach Boys special insert, with the exception of Billy Hinsche...he's not listed in the program, but years later, in an interview with BBFUN, Billy mentioned that this was his first show with the Boys, playing glockenspiel and tambourine with Ricky Fataar. These shows marked the concert debut of the "Surf's Up" album, and also a rare 1971 performance of FEEL FLOWS, which was then dropped until 1974. Dennis sings an incredible version of BARBARA, with an extra verse not found in the officially-released "Endless Harmony" version. After SURF'S UP, someone in the audience yells "Where's Brian?" Dennis responds, "Brian's in the song", and Carl adds, "Good answer". Also, another rareity - Mike Love recites a poem on Transcendental Meditation. "

Ben Winkler writes: "I was at the 9/24/71 11:00 p.m. show at Carnegie Hall. I believe yoursetlist is from the early show, as I don't remember "Feel Flows." It also might be that there were no more encores for the early show, as the time was limited for the 1st audience to vacant and the 2nd audience to enter and get seated. The concert itself was probably the best Beach Boy show I ever saw, out of about 20. The small hall, the excellent acoustics, an audience very savvy on their post-Pet Sounds material, the horn section, new songs and a performance of 'Surf's Up' -- incredible! They were called back for 3 encores. Finally, when the crowd wouldn't leave, they had to come back without their instruments, to bid us a final good night."

About the encore, C-Man writes: "The tape ends after the first song in the encore, but it's very likely they did a few other tunes, including HELP ME RHONDA, since Bruce promised earlier in the show that they would do that one, and also since it's in the encore of several other late 1971 shows."

Update: Barry Piatoff, who attended this concert, recalls that there were five additional songs in the encore, including "Little Deuce Coupe", "Help Me Rhonda", and "Johnny B. Goode", and two others. (Ed: I'm guessing one is "Surfer Girl").

Venue Unknown 1971 C-Man writes: "Not sure what the date or venue is, but it has to be pretty close to the above show. This is taken from a photograph of a backstage chalkboard in David Leaf's book "The Beach Boys and the California Myth". Carl is shown working on the setlist in one photo, and in another photo, Bruce is shown signing his name after the words 'We played here for the money $ The Beach Boys'. After HEROES AND VILLAINS, IT"S ABOUT TIME was written, but a line was drawn through it, indicating it was dropped. Also, after SURFIN' U.S.A., Carl wrote "OFF" and "NO 2ND ENCORE" with "NO" underlined several times for emphasis."

Georgetown University, Washington, DC November 7, 1971 C-Man writes: "This is THE SHOW that turned David Leaf from a casual hits-oriented fan into the fan-atic that would one day write the best book ever on the group, "The Beach Boys And The California Myth" (not to mention the fact that he is now Brian Wilson's personal manager). In the special 50th issue of STOMP! (August 1985) David lists his ten (actually he cheated and listed 11) favorite Beach Boys concerts. Not surprisingly, this took first place. Here is what he said regarding this show: "1. Fall, 1971, Georgetown University: Don't even have to think about this. The band was at its performing peak, the material was a near-perfect blend of old and new, Dennis played ballads at the piano and Carl sang "Surf's Up", "Help Me Rhonda" was a revelation. On top of everything else, I had a free, second row seat" (because he was reviewing the show for his college newspaper)." .

Editor note: It's notable that Dennis performs "Barbara" and "I've Got A Friend", two songs that were unreleased at the time.

Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA December 3, 1971 C-Man writes: "Probably the only performance ever of 'A Day In The Life Of A Tree'. The Boys coaxed Brian out from the side of the stage to play organ while Jack Rieley sang it. They were going to do 'Heroes and Villains', but had to shorten the set because the Long Beach Police were going to turn the power off at a certain time. At the end of the main set, following 'Surf's Up', Jack Rieley comes onstage and announces they have just enough time to do two more before the plug is pulled, so instead of leaving and coming back for an encore, they just stay on stage and do the last two. The high vocal part on the end of 'Fun Fun Fun' is performed exactly 25 times tonight (I counted 'em!). Brian may have joined in for that, but Rob isn't sure. Contrary to what is written in Keith Badman's book, 'Surfer Girl' is not performed tonight."

Royal Festival Hall, London, England March 29, 1972 It is unknown whether Bruce Johnston had left the band by this time, but audio recordings seem to indicate that he is not present. A contributor notes that around this time that "Heroes And Villains" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" were likely to be the opening numbers, performed prior to "Long Promised Road" (circulating recordings begin with Long Promised Road, but are likely missing some prior numbers). Mike Love recites a poem "Rishikesh" (as originally featured on Charles Lloyd LP "Waves").

Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa, FL April 2, 1972 This was Bruce Johnston's final show before leaving the band, not to come back until late 1978. This is one of just a handful of shows that featured Bruce Johnston AND Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar.

Regarding this, C-Man notes: "Bruce told Brad Elliott in 1981 that 'Tampa was the last place I played'. Bruce must've known he was leaving (whether he had told the other guys or not), because prior to singing "Disney Girls" he announced that this would be the last time he would ever sing it (which of course turned out not to be the case)."

Another interesting note from C-Man: "Mike announced their flight number and depature time for anyone who cared to drive to the airport to see them off at midnight!"

A tape that is circulating features what seems to be a differently ordered setlist, but upon listening, one will notice that songs have been cut and pasted in certain sections. This setlist is identical to the one from 3/8/72, except the intermission has been dropped. Dennis announced during the show that they would be skipping the intermission.

July 3, 1976 "C-Man" writes: "This was Brian's first FULL concert since the Whiskey in 1970 (he joined them the night before in Oakland after the first few songs). It was also the beginning of a long run using CALIFORNIA GIRLS as the opener. This show was filmed for the Beach Boys NBC-TV special broadcast later that summer. This may explain the unusal order of songs (it may have been decided by the show's producer, Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live fame, that some songs would work better earlier in the show, thus they were performed while it was still light, while others were performed after the sun had gone down, and were used later in the special). This show also marked the introduction of several songs from the '15 Big Ones" album, which would be released two days later."

Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland, FL September 3, 1978 C-Man writes: "An extra long show, especially considering the group had played another concert, in Miami, earlier that day. This was one of Bruce's first shows since returning to the band. Although at the time Bruce's return was being called "temporary", we all know how that went...Bruce had joined the guys in Miami, at Brian's request, to work on tracks for the 'L.A. (Light Album)' in-between dates of this southeast tour. Also accompanying the group were Jan & Dean, who performed a total of four songs with the Boys. Brian was in good voice and played bass most of the show. Dennis, unfortunately, was very drunk and abandoned his drum kit in favor of the frontstage mics for 'In My Room' (Carl commanded him back to the drums for the next song), and the last several songs (starting with 'Rock And Roll Music' and apparently continuing through the encore). Bobby Figueroa switched from percussion to drums to cover for Dennis. Members of the audience could be heard shouting things like 'Sober up!', 'You're plastered!', and 'I can smell the whiskey!'. At the beginning of the encore, Carli Munoz started playing the piano intro to 'You Are So Beautiful', but instead of singing that song right away, Dennis introduced Bruce, who came out and did 'I Write The Songs' (according to him, for the first time in front of an audience). Following that number, Carli and Dennis returned to do 'You Are So Beautiful', with Dennis jokingly thanking 'Texas' and 'Kansas' instead of Florida."
